In 2007 new turntables were installed in the Gatún Locks (Panama Canal). These turntables are designed to switch 60 locomotives per day with a maximum switching time of 60 seconds, so as to respond to increasing traffic demand through the Canal.
IDOM teamed up with Ingemat to undertake the structural and mechanical design, provide supervision during manufacturing, assembly, test, delivery and installation on site of the two turntables.
The contract specification included a requirement to fit in the former foundations, pits and infrastructures, in order to minimise work and time of installation on site. For the rest, new design concepts were applied in order to improve performance, reliability and life of the installation.
