Radiopharmacy drugs production unit in Virgen de la Arrixaca University Hospital in Murcia
Spain
IDOM carries out the basic and detailed engineering and works management project of a Pharmaceutical laboratory within Virgen de la Arrixaca University Hospital at Murcia. This facility will be used for production of injectable radiopharmaceuticals for molecular diagnostics and therapy in the Positron Emission Tomography (PET). The building is divided mainly in four areas: administrative, production, radiation area and engine area. The building accounts for 80 m² for office purposes, a production area of about 250 m² with some laboratories/white rooms classified as class C (ISO 7) for the installation of synthesis cells classified as class B & A (ISO 5). On the other hand, there is an area of about 100 m² destined to the cyclotron and its installations. The technical room has an area of about 120 m².
The administrative area is about 80 m² and it is divided in 2 spaces, a meeting room and an administration common area, bathrooms and an electric room. It is built in metallic structure and covered with concrete slab.
The area of production corresponds to the area where the products are manipulated in order to obtain the final radiomedicine. It consists of three laboratories equipped with “hot cells” supplied by COMECER. This area also possesses different warehouses (quarantine and raw material), two quality assurance laboratories, offices for pharmacists, delivery area and the dressing rooms. It is executed in metal structure coated wrought uncooperative on which the engine-room lies.
The radiation zone is the area where the cyclotron and its control room is located as well as the area of decay. Solid and liquid wastes until its complete inertization are manipulated in both areas. This area is executed in reinforced concrete. Particularly in the area of the bunker, there is an upper cover of 2 meters thick. The cyclotron has been provided by General Electric.
The engine room, which is located on the roof, includes the UTAS, filters, fans, part of radioprotection system, the boiler and chiller probes. Due to the particularity of this type of installation, this area of the facility becomes significant. It is executed in metallic structure with covered with sandwich panels.
In general, the building has a radiation alarm system featuring environmental and ventilation sensors complying with the requirements of the Spanish Medical Drug Agency (Agencia Española del Medicamento) and the relevant standard of clean rooms (UNE-EN_ISO 14644).
This building and the facilities have been validated by the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear, CSN) and by the Agencia Española del Medicamento prior to its commissioning and start up.
