The cultural value of engineering

FOUR NATIONAL CIVIL ENGINEERING AWARD WINNERS PARTICIPATE IN A SEMINAR, CHAIRED BY JORGE BERNABÉU

The meeting held at the Civil Engineering College of Madrid (Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos) last November 28, brought together four National Civil Engineering Award winners: José Calavera, Javier Manterola, Julio Martínez Calzón and Javier Rui-Wamba. Under the title of “The Recovery of Modernity in engineering. The legacy of twentieth century Civil Engineering. Buildings and Bridges”, the social and cultural relevance of public works was addressed. Beyond their function, bridges and structures acquire meanings that endow the location with identity, while forming an important part of built heritage.

The event was moderated by our colleague from IDOM, Jorge Bernabéu, professor of History and Aesthetics of Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. It was a unique opportunity to listen to four exceptional engineers who combine technical excellence and humanistic reflection. The seminar brought together more than 200 professionals of all generations and highlighted the importance of what has been built and the important relationship between engineering and culture in society.
