Award for the Bahrain Metro
Sustainable, efficient and safe public transport
On February 7, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE, Bahrain Chapter) awarded IDOM the Bahrain Project of the Year 2018 prize for the Design of the Bahrain Metro.
The event brought together the consulting firms and the authorities of the Gulf country. IDOM won the prize, after tough competition from other finalists such as Aecom or Mott McDonald. In choosing the winner, aspects such as the implementation of the latest technologies in the design, the commitment to the client’s objectives and the contribution of the project to the Bahraini society were valued.
IDOM has been working since 2017 with the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications of the Kingdom of Bahrain in the development of a Metro network that will connect the main economic, administrative, educational, medical and recreational centres throughout the country.
Phase 1 is a network of two lines (Red Line and Blue Line) that total 28.6 km, which is almost entirely elevated with a small section at ground level. The system has 20 stations, 2 of which are transfer stations, around which transport-oriented urban planning activities will take place. The workshops and depots have also been designed. The trains will be completely driverless. It is expected that operations will commence by the end of 2025.
Phase 1 is the first of other successive ones that, until 2055, will configure a network of 4 Lines, 109 km in total.
The Bahrain Metro is the second large-scale transport project to be developed by IDOM in the Gulf area after the Detail Design of Line 3 of the Riyadh Metro (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), which is currently undergoing testing.
