Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Bangladesh
Developing ITS systems
Bangladesh is one of the world’s most populous countries. There are 18 million inhabitants living in Dhaka Metropolitan Area alone. The city is the core of the political, cultural and financial life of Bangladesh. These are some of the reasons, the Government is embarking on an ambitious mass transit program, and Greater Dhaka is adopting the Revised Strategic Transport Plan (RSTP) as a master plan for 2035. The RSTP involves a network of five mass rapid transit (MRT) lines, and two bus rapid transit (BRT) lines.
Government of Bangladesh will develop the 42 km BRT line 3: the first BRT system in Bangladesh. The World Bank, under the Dhaka Public Transport Improvement Project, will fund the 10 km of the south section of the BRT Line 3 from the airport station to the Mohakhali terminal (the first phase of the 20 km BRT line 3 south corridor recommended in the RSTP) and associated facilities, including stations, redevelopment of a large inter-city bus terminal, Mohakhali Terminal, construction of the Keraniganj Depot, restructuring of existing operators along the corridor and improvement of access roads and traffic management system for the area covering the corridor.
IDOM, through the Korea- World Bank Partnership Fund (KWPF), is supporting the World Bank in the preparation of this project in the ITS (intelligent transportation systems) related activities.
