The healthcare revolution
We took part in the XXI National Congress on Hospitals and Hospital Management
On May 8th, 9th and 10th this year, the XXI National Congress on Hospitals and Hospital Management was held in Santiago de Compostela, under the motto “Innovation: Road to Sustainability”.
On this new occasion, more than 300 speakers, experts in different areas of the healthcare sector, reflected upon topics such as innovation, future strategic solutions, welfare models, regulation changes, chronicity, patient experience and trends, management models, technology, brands and image and other issues of interest to the healthcare executives.
Representing IDOM, Maria Angeles Sanchez Ortega and Rui Maia did a presentation that intended to show new trends in hospital architecture. The idea is not only to intervene in those sensory aspects linked to the materialization of visual and environmental comfort, but also to play an adequate role in clinical and caring processes that have a direct positive impact on the financial and clinical management of the hospital infrastructure.
Maria Angeles talked about the case of the recently inaugurated CUF DESCOBERTAS hospital extension in Lisbon, a project directed by Rui Maia in which breaking away from conventional standards was necessary, which in turn brought about a true revolution in hospital design.

An innovative approach
Starting with the definition of holism put forward by Aristotle in his Metaphysics – “the whole is more than the sum of its parts” – a multidisciplinary team formed by architects, engineers from all fields, doctors, nurses and hospital managers got together and involved in creative and interactive ways, from the very first ideas that marked the blank piece of paper to the very end of the project. The end result of this effort was the construction of a unique hospital in the Iberian Peninsula. It has high comfort, energy and functional standards while it opens up to the direct participation of the design in the clinical activity, innovating and reducing management costs.
