Official inauguration of the construction of the Kutaisi Proton Therapy Centre, Georgia
With the participation of the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili
On the 5th of July, the first stone was laid for the Proton Therapy Centre that IDOM is developing at the International University of Kutaisi, in Georgia.
The event was attended by the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, the Minister of Education and Science, Mikheil Chkhenkeli, the Director General of the Cartu Charitable Foundation, Nikoloz Chkhetiani, and the Rector of the International University of Kutaisi, Aleksandre Tevzadze. Representing IDOM were Pablo Elorz, Project Manager Architect, and Dmitry Avdeev, the Regional Director of IDOM for Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
In addition to the Proton Therapy Centre for the treatment of patients, the new building will house a Scientific Research Centre for nuclear medicine and physics. With a surface area of 6,792 m2 on a plot of 15,185 m2, the project is organised around two bunkers housing the Proteus One IBA for patient treatment and the S2C2 IBA for research.
The clinical section of the building contains 4 consultation rooms, a treatment planning area with an MRI and a PET-CT scanner, a patient preparation area with two anaesthesia boxes, the Proton Therapy control room, the dosimetry room and offices and work areas for doctors and staff. The research section contains electronics and mechanical laboratories, a clean room, an assembly hall for seminars and conferences, training rooms, work areas and offices for research staff.
IDOM has provided all the integrated design services for this project, including architectural design, structural design and calculation, development of all MEP engineering, Telecommunications and Security systems, Special Installations, sustainability and energy efficiency studies, interior design and landscaping.
We will also carry out the Construction Supervision during the building construction works and provide support during the installation of the Proton Therapy and Research equipment.
The high complexity and technical particularities of this type of project require, on the one hand, the integration of a highly specialised multidisciplinary team (including Nuclear Services necessary for Radioprotection and Licensing) and, on the other hand, experience and knowledge in similar projects. IDOM has extensive experience in Proton Therapy projects, Radiopharmacy Laboratories and other Nuclear Medicine equipment integrated into the hospital architecture.
The Proton Therapy and Research Centre, whose construction is being fully funded by the Cartu Foundation, will begin admitting patients in 2024.
IDOM has been working in Georgia since 2017 developing a wide range of architecture, urban planning, engineering and consultancy projects.
