Safety studies and dose assessment for IFMIF-DONES
Spain
IFMIF-DONES is an irradiation facility to be built in Granada (Spain) for the research and testing, by neutron irradiation, of materials to be used in the construction of the future DEMO fusion power plant. In this context, the safety of IFMIF-DONES is a fundamental aspect, as it ensures that tests and operations are carried out under strict controls that minimize radiological and operational risks.
As part of the safety analysis, dose limits are assigned to reference accident scenarios, which determines the need to generate relevant data for accident analysis and radiological risk assessment.
IDOM performed a review and update of the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of the particle accelerator, taking into account all systems and failure modes. In a second phase, event trees for probabilistic analysis were developed from the FMEA data and reliability databases for similar components in other particle accelerators. In the deterministic part, different models were developed using the MELCOR accident analysis software to analyse vacuum loss accidents in the beam tube, with mobilisation of radioactive contamination, as well as hydrogen leakage in process lines and in the accelerator ion source.
Other safety studies have been carried out to assess the occupational exposure of IFMIF-DONES workers.
