Vouliagmenis Mixed-Use Tower (MUT) – Athens
Greece
IDOM is participating in the design of the Vouliagmenis Mixed-Use Tower (MUT) providing integrated engineering services including structures, MEP, Sustainability, Façade, Acoustics, Fire and vertical transportation engineering services. IDOM is collaborating with the International Architects, Aedas. The MUT is envisaged as an iconic 160 m building, one of the first towers to be built in Athens as part of The Ellinikon development.
The MUT is configured for office spaces on the lower floors, a luxury hotel in the middle part and branded residences on the top, in addition to underground parking and storage areas. The tower also offers additional uses such as outdoor and indoor pools at different levels and on the rooftop.
The structural design strategy for this tall building has the objective of taking a sound and safe approach that provides cost-effective solutions developed as a coordinated response to the proposed architectural design. One of the key issues is the lateral stability against seismic and wind loads, as Greece is especially prone to earthquakes and the wind load is also high. The combined piled-raft base foundation (CPRF) is also an important aspect since it brings benefits in terms of cost and schedule by reducing the pile materials.
The structure solution is based on a central core system connected to the perimeter columns by slabs, in which by working the three main elements together, the design of the core is optimized. The reinforced concrete core is responsible for resisting the lateral stability of the building against lateral loads and is adjusted to suit the layout and use of each floor. A secondary core supports the larger lower floors. The perimeter columns transmit the vertical loads downwards and are distributed according to the architectural proposal.
