IDOM presents the sustainable transport of the future in Zanzibar
Last April 17, the study “Reorganization and Electrification of the Zanzibar Public Transport System” was unveiled in Zanzibar. Financed by a non-refundable FIEM within the NextGeneration program of the European Union.
IDOM worked with the Government of Zanzibar to design and secure funding for this project, which is a response to the mobility needs of the people of Zanzibar. The project aims to improve the public transport system to ensure sustainable development and complement other parallel funding projects to maximize impact and attract new investment.
In addition, an important social component is highlighted, including the training of students from the Karume Institute of Science and Technology and the collaboration with the Spanish NGO KUKUA with an ambitious “engagement plan” that aims to ensure the needs of the local community to the program and work to build a social consensus, including the most vulnerable groups.
The event was attended by the Spanish Ambassador to Tanzania, Jorge Moragas, and inaugurated by Zanzibar’s Minister of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, Dr. Khalid Salum Mohamed, who stressed the need to strengthen public transport and thanked IDOM for its work in making the study possible.
This day was a great opportunity to identify the project’s objectives and share opinions with other stakeholders that will help achieve more sustainable, safe and inclusive mobility for all Zanzibari society.
