Innovation and sustainability at the Smart Territories Conference of RECI

On May 7-8, IDOM participated as the Technical Office of the Spanish Network of Smart Cities (RECI) in the successful Smart Territories Meeting held in Cáceres. This event, organized in collaboration with the Provincial Council of Cáceres, was fundamental for the exchange of ideas and best practices to improve the quality of life in our municipalities and communities.

The event brought together a group of experts, local authorities and private sector representatives for discussion and analysis of the challenges and opportunities facing our communities in terms of innovation and sustainability.  The first day, May 7, was reserved for RECI members and municipalities interested in joining this innovation network. Topics ranging from policy development and governance to the impact of tourism destinations as drivers of territorial development were explored during this session.

The second day, which was open to the public, provided a space to exchange ideas on territorial governance, data cybersecurity and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Territorial Development. The role of tourism as an economic driver and its integration into smart territorial strategies was also discussed. Prominent speakers included Miguel Ángel Morales, President of Cáceres Provincial Council, and José de la Uz Pardos, President of RECI and Mayor of Las Rozas City Council, who praised the event’s organization and stressed the importance of networking and inter-institutional cooperation.

The phenomenon of young people migrating from rural areas to large cities such as Madrid and Barcelona in search of work and educational opportunities was one of the topics discussed. Experts reflected on the impact of this migration on the development of the regions and explored possible strategies to promote the retention of talent in rural areas.

The Smart Territories meeting in Cáceres was a testament to the power of collaboration and shared commitment to creating a more prosperous and sustainable future for all. We will continue to work to realize this vision and build smarter, more resilient communities across the country.
