Future of water meets in Copenhagen

We took part in the first European YWP – Young Water Professional – Conference in Copenhagen, where young people from all over Europe came together with a common goal – WATER.

During the event, David Seelman and María Cano, from the Water Division of the IDOM, presented the project “El Hierro Hydro-Wind Power Plant: A Key Player in the Spanish Island’s Energy Self-Sufficiency”. This project combines a hydroelectric plant with 4 Pelton turbines, a wind farm with 5 wind turbines and a desalination plant. Its aim is to reduce diesel consumption and supply the island of El Hierro with energy from renewable sources. Since its inauguration ten years ago, it has achieved significant results, such as 28 consecutive days of energy self-sufficiency in 2023, representing 50% of the annual supply.

In addition to the presentations, participants were taken on technical tours, including the Biofos wastewater treatment plant, where they learned about the treatments applied to the water and sludge generated. They also toured Copenhagen to observe urban adaptations to climate change and the city’s relationship with water. The conference emphasized the importance of sustainable solutions and international cooperation to meet the water challenges of the future.
