Sanitation around Lake Ohrid, protecting the UNESCO World Heritage Site

Europe

This project, based at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lake Ohrid, confronts environmental challenges through innovative wastewater management strategies. Supported by the Fund for the Internationalization of Companies (FIEM), it aims to significantly enhance infrastructure to protect the lake’s unique biodiversity and foster sustainable community development. IDOM collaborates with PE Kollektorski System and local authorities to implement advanced solutions across multiple facilities, with a projected total treatment capacity of 26,241 m³/day and serving a population equivalent (PE) of 126,589 during the peak season in 2051. This includes the upgrade or construction of the following facilities:

  • Vranishta WWTP: Enhanced capacity, serving extended areas without new land use.
  • Ljubanishta WWTP: Reconstruction to meet top sanitation standards; caters to local settlements and campgrounds.
  • Radozhda WWTP: A new facility to independently handle wastewater from Radozhda
  • Elsani Collector: Dual gravity collector system to integrate high-altitude sections, reducing direct pollution to the lake.
  • Podmolje WWTP: New wastewater treatment plant intercepts the collector from Ohrid, includes sludge digestion, and enables biogas reuse.
