IDOM participates in the Bilbao Urban Planning Conference
From November 21 to 24, Bilbao will host the “Jornadas Urbanistas”, an event that will bring together urban planners and professionals from the sector to discuss the “new economic spaces in the contemporary city”. This meeting, which will host the annual assemblies of the European Council of Spatial Planners – Conseil Européen des Urbanistes (ECTP-CEU), the Asociación Española de Técnicos Urbanistas (AETU) and the Unión de Agrupaciones de Arquitectos Urbanistas (UAAU), will focus on analyzing urban transformations in a context of rapid social, economic and technological change.
The main objective of this conference is to understand how urban spaces for economic activities are evolving in cities, adapting to new forms of housing, commerce and production. During the event, both local and international projects and experiences will be presented, and the efficient integration of economic spaces in urban planning, as well as their impact on housing, transportation and urban services, will be discussed.
On Friday afternoon, IDOM will hold a special session in the auditorium to present the future projects of the city in which we are involved. Among them, we highlight the urban redevelopment of Punta Zorroza.
The regeneration project of Punta Zorroza, with 32 hectares of land, represents a great opportunity to recover disused port and industrial areas, benefiting the city and promoting a new relationship with the landscape, water, heritage and cultural activities. Located between the Nervion estuary and the Kadagua River, the project aims to connect the residential areas with the natural environment through terraced buildings that take advantage of the views of the waterways, configuring a new way of living in Punta Zorroza.
The plan includes approximately 2,000 housing units, 45% of which will be affordable, an area for economic activities related to cinema and performing arts (125,000 square meters of built area), public and private facilities (50,000 square meters of land) and green areas (more than 100,000 square meters of land).
The main objectives of the project are:
- To recognize and revalue the banks of the Nervion Estuary and the Kadagua River as public spaces of great importance.
- Regenerate and highlight the historical past of the area.
- Connect Punta Zorroza with the immediate urban context: Zorroza, Burtzeña, Elorrieta and Zorrotzaurre.
- The IDOM proposal is divided into five areas with their own character and identity, but complementary to each other, forming a diverse and dynamic urban environment.
The project also incorporates several transversal areas:
- Heritage: Integrates and revalorizes protected buildings through commercial, cultural and educational uses. The old railroad will be preserved as an axis of sustainable mobility and the Alzola Bridge will be rehabilitated with a possible pedestrian route to Burtzeña.
- Sustainability and Climate Change: The proposal includes active roofs for terraces, viewpoints and solar energy generation, floodable parks with storm tanks, low environmental impact materials and 47% of space for green and open areas, improving the absorption of radiation and mitigating the heat island effect.
