Agrocity: An innovative plan for Saudi Arabia’s food resilience

The UNCCD COP16 has gathered the key actors and decision makers involved in the sustainable transformation of the Saudi cities & territories in their role at combating desertification. Among these actors, regional development authorities, municipalities, airport authorities, and public companies stand out. In this context, DOM consolidated its commitments to continue working hand-in-hand with the Saudi cities and regions in their strive for a resilient and sustainable future. In this mindset, IDOM works with the Saudi institutions in the aim for improving quality of living, for diversification of the economy, and for climate change adaptation.

In these commitments, IDOM presents the Agrocity Project, in the panel of the “National Program for Maximizing the Utilization of Renawable Water – Sustainable Agrocities” arranged by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. During the session, IDOM presented the Agrocity as a space to enhance greening, preserve the environment, bolster economic sector growth, and contribute to food security in the Kingdom. Moreover, during the Q/A session with the attendees, IDOM highlighted how the Agrocity contributes with the Kingdom’s resilience in terms of food security, recycled-water use, reliance on renewable energies, circular economy and R&D. Also, the regional impacts triggered in the Agrocity were highlighted, such as the potential access to global markets with added-value agriproducts and given its strategic location on the Red Sea Coast, along with job creation in the area of convergence of Jedah-Meccah-Taif and a cooling environmental effect as for the local impacts.
