Improving climate resilience by increasing water security in the Amazon

Bolivia | Brazil | Colombia | Ecuador | Peru

The Green Climate Fund approves the Funding Proposal developed by IDOM to improve climate resilience through water security in the Amazon.

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved the funding proposal for the project Improving Climate Resilience by Increasing Water Security in the Amazon, a landmark initiative promoted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). This project, with an investment of US$391.4 million, will benefit nearly 6 million people in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Suriname, and represents a significant step forward in the fight against the effects of climate change in the Amazon Basin.

For IDOM, this is the first Funding Proposal (FP) in which it has participated and received approval from the GCF. Within this framework, the IDB, as executing agency, will manage the funds – composed of grants and loans – during the seven-year duration of the program. Activities will range from the implementation of early warning systems and nature-based solutions to the development of water, sanitation and waste management infrastructure, always with a focus on adaptation to climate change.

The program aims to address the challenges posed by the climate crisis to water availability and quality in the Amazon. To this end, nature-based solutions will be implemented to enable integrated water resources management (IWRM), with special emphasis on the protection of vulnerable communities and indigenous peoples. It will also strengthen regional early warning systems, develop climate-resilient infrastructure, and design innovative financing mechanisms for ecosystem-based adaptation.

IDOM’s Natural Capital team has played a key role in the development of this project through the following activities:

  • Integration of the funding proposal
  • Preparation of the feasibility study
  • Economic-financial analysis
  • Detailed budget
  • Definition of the schedule of activities
  • Procurement plan
  • Program monitoring and evaluation plan
  • Risk mapping and program implementation
  • Multi-country information management
  • GHG emission reduction impact assessment
  • Beneficiary analysis
