Functional program and equipment plan for the National Children’s Hospital in Bulgaria
The IDOM Health team, together with the EIB, was in Sofia, Bulgaria, to present the functional program and equipment plan of the National Children’s Hospital to the Bulgarian Ministry of Health.
The functional relationships and distances between the departments of the hospital, as well as the relationship of all the equipment and furniture of the proposed rooms, have been defined on the basis of the capacity plan already presented. This hospital will have 440 beds, 18 operating rooms and more than 90,000 square meters. For three days, working sessions were held with various experts from the Public Council (an association of Bulgarian medical specialists and NGOs specialized in pediatrics) and experts in regulatory aspects.
IDOM designed the hospital with the children and their parents in mind, planning spacious rooms, play areas, a school within the hospital, and functional connections between rooms. This design recognizes that despite the difficult situation of being hospitalized and the length of time they must spend there, they are still children and their development is critical.
Children’s hospitals in Bulgaria still face significant challenges in raising their quality standards. The National Children’s Hospital represents a unique opportunity that has attracted the interest of experts and healthcare professionals. As a result, these experts and professionals have been intensively involved in meetings to find a balance between implementing innovative proposals and complying with current regulations.
