Advanced ITS technology for road development in Ethiopia
IDOM continues to cement its presence in Ethiopia’s transportation sector with the extension of its services to the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA). IDOM’s collaboration on the Modjo-Hawassa road project, a 202 km stretch connecting Modjo to Hawassa, is key to the development of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) in the country.
The first contract was signed on February 19, 2019, under the ITS system planning and design consultancy services for the Modjo-Hawassa road, a major project that represents the first modern road transport infrastructure in Ethiopia. The contract includes planning, design and procurement support services for Lots 1 and 2 of the road.
After the successful completion of the ITS system design and procurement support services, IDOM signed a 10-month extension contract to supervise the implementation of the ITS systems and tolling on the Modjo-Meki-Zeway section of the Modjo-Hawassa Highway. Currently, the supervision services have been extended for an additional 9+ months, with operations scheduled to commence in June 2025.
This project underscores IDOM’s commitment to improving Ethiopia’s road infrastructure by implementing advanced technological solutions that will improve traffic efficiency and safety on one of the country’s main arteries.
