Advances in railway design for a more sustainable future
On October 17, the Escuela Técnica Superior de Caminos, Canales y Puertos de Granada hosted the II Technical Conference “R+D+i in Materials and Technologies for the Construction and Maintenance of Railway Infrastructures”, organized by the Civil Engineering Laboratory of the University of Granada (LabIC.UGR) and the Spanish Railway Technological Platform, in collaboration with ADIF, CEDEX and AOPJA.
IDOM was represented by Borja Manzano Hidalgo, Infrastructure BIM Manager & Railway Sustainability Leader, presenting “Rail Báltica: Contribution of Railway Design to the SDGs.” In his presentation, he highlighted IDOM’s role as a leader in the integration of sustainability in railway design, emphasizing the importance of reducing carbon emissions, digitalization, and the consideration of social and environmental factors throughout the lifecycle of infrastructure.
During the conference, the progress of new products to reduce noise and vibration was presented. These are essential to improve comfort and minimize environmental impact. The latest advances in using recycled materials, such as tire rubber and recycled roadbeds, for rail infrastructure applications were also discussed.
The need to advance the digital transformation of the sector was discussed, focusing on implementing new telecommunications networks that allow real-time management of key aspects such as passenger flow and energy efficiency.
These advances reflect IDOM’s commitment to creating more sustainable and efficient rail infrastructure in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing within a circular economy framework.
