Decarbonizing cities

The decarbonization of cities through the implementation of Low Emission Zones (LEZs) is a fundamental strategy supported by the European Union and adopted by member states. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve urban air quality. These zones restrict or discourage the use of highly polluting vehicles, thereby promoting public transport, shared mobility and more sustainable modes of transport such as cycling and walking.

In Spain, cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants and provincial capitals have been funded to create ZBEs. These actions are part of a comprehensive plan that includes the transformation of public transport and the digitalization of transport services. Significant investments are being made in sustainable transport and digitalization.

In addition, the Paris Agreement and the United Nations 2030 Agenda with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) establish a global framework for climate action and promote investment in sustainable infrastructure, including transport, as a prerequisite for the achievement of many of the SDGs.

In cities such as Bilbao, El Prat de Llobregat, Huesca, Terrassa and Sarajevo, IDOM has developed innovative technical solutions for ZBEs. ZBEs improve the quality of life, reduce NOx emissions by 15% and PM10 by 50%, and promote more efficient and sustainable mobility.

We are actively contributing to the creation of sustainable cities and continue to work towards a cleaner and healthier urban future!
