Decommissioning nuclear power plants

International meeting on nuclear safety

The components removed from decommissioned nuclear power plants have completed wither part or all of their lifecycle under a normal operation; therefore, they are enormously valuable in terms of research as they can be used to contrast technical studies and laboratory experiments. The result of this work allows engineers to optimize the safety coefficients used in the design phase.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has launched a project with the objective of establishing international collaboration to study the recovery, measurement, registering and analysis of materials removed from decommissioned nuclear power plants.

Recently, a meeting was held in Madrid, which was attended by the coordinator of the IAEA, Mr. Polyakov and representatives from Spain, Romania, Canada, Japan, USA, Belgium, France, Hungary, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

The Technical Manager of IDOM Nuclear Services, Iñaki Gorrochategui, represented IDOM at the meeting.
