For an inclusive National Adaptation Plan in Belize

IDOM develops consultancy to analyze how to reduce risks and protect vulnerable communities in the formulation of a National Adaptation Plan in Belize.

With the aim of strengthening Belize’s resilience to the impacts of climate change, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management of Belize, with the support of the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), has launched the project “Gap, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment for the Development of Belize’s Multisectoral National Adaptation Plan.”

The climate change team in Mexico is currently working on risk and vulnerability assessments, incorporating a gender approach and the inclusion of indigenous groups. This assessment will provide key technical information for the development of the Multisectoral NAP, which will integrate climate change adaptation into existing policies, programs, and planning processes.

In January, three regional workshops were held in Orange Walk, Dangriga, and San Ignacio, with the participation of national and district authorities, academics, civil society organizations, students, and indigenous leaders. During the sessions, the objectives of the consultancy were presented, initial findings on climate threats were shared, and a participatory mapping of climate impacts was conducted.

We thank all participants for their valuable contributions and reaffirm our commitment to continuing our work for a more resilient future for Belize and the world.
