Artificial intelligence in port management
Traceability and geolocation system for ro-ro cargo in the Port of Algeciras
The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) has successfully tested and validated an autonomous traceability and geolocation system of the ro-ro cargo within the Heavy Traffic Terminal (TTP) of the Port. This is an innovative solution in the field of advanced data science and artificial intelligence in which IDOM has collaborated, through the Technical Innovation Office, and Amazon Web Services, as a technological partner.
With the use of advanced techniques such as Computer Vision and Machine Learning, the solution allows us to acquire, process, analyze and understand the images from the APBA Image Capture System. In this way, the trucks that pass through the TTP are identified and monitored and events of interest are automatically detected, such as the occupation or freeing-up of parking spaces.
The new system improves the process of managing and locating the cargo in the TTP rotation area, reducing the service time dedicated to the collection of intermodal transport units (TUs), platforms and semi-trailers from this storage area, both from the stowage and from the carriers themselves.
All of this is of the utmost importance, as it is the Port of Algeciras TTP, one of the main traffic centers for ro-ro cargo through which exchange flows between Europe and Morocco are channeled.
