On board the most sustainable round-the-world trip

Last Friday, IDOM signed an agreement to collaborate with the ambitious project “Desafío Victoria”, an initiative inspired by the historic expedition of the ship Victoria, with which Magellan and Elcano made the first circumnavigation 500 years ago, marking the beginning of globalization and changing human history forever.

The “Desafío Victoria”, captained by Alex Pella, will attempt to revive the legendary circumnavigation of the globe to the west. It will follow the original route, fighting against the winds and currents, with no stops or assistance, using only the energies of nature. This voyage is no less ambitious than Verne’s. It is expected to take 100 days, starting in November 2025.

But it’s not just the athletic challenge that fascinates us. It’s also the commitment to the principles of decarbonization, circularity and regenerative economy that is raising awareness and inspiring millions of people of all ages in all parts of the world.

The Maxicatamaran Victoria, 33.5 m long and 42.6 m high, is therefore a reused boat. When it was rescued by the Pella team, it had been scrapped in 2000 and was in a state of total disrepair. It was a practical case of technological innovation and circularity to restore this boat and adapt it to the challenge for which it is being prepared. In addition, the boat is powered only by renewable energy, has sustainable consumables, and has a waste minimization and management strategy.

The MaxiCat Victoria will be the first challenger of the Elcano Oceanic Trophy, the international grand prize that recognizes the challenge of sailing around the world in a CO2-neutral manner. It follows in the footsteps of Magellan and Elcano. The Elcano Oceanic Trophy is the world’s largest sporting challenge in terms of distance and competition time. It is also the cleanest, as it requires a zero-emissions, zero-waste circumnavigation.

Fascinated by this project, IDOM wanted to actively participate in the calculation and monitoring of the carbon footprint of the “Desafío Victoria” ocean crossing, thus contributing to the achievement of the project’s sustainability goals. Through this collaboration, we want to support Álex’s team in their sustainable adventure, so that together we can continue to work towards protecting our environment.

At IDOM we love challenges. They require commitment, strategy, preparation, skill and “rowing” as a team, and all of this is the essence of our work.

Good luck Maxicat Victoria, we will be following you!
