Evaluation and improvement of the mechanical systems of the Borssele nuclear power plant
In November, the head of the Nuclear Area of the IDOM Madrid office, Victor Manuel Garcia Gallego, embarked on a pre-SALTO mission organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the Borssele Nuclear Power Plant in the Netherlands. During this mission, Victor assumed the role of Mechanical Area Reviewer.
The mission team consisted of a team leader and deputy team leader from the IAEA and six reviewers, each responsible for a specific area of review, including Victor. In addition, four observers joined the team to assist some of the reviewers and to gain experience to become future reviewers. The team consisted of experts from Argentina, France, Slovenia, Spain and the United States, and observers from Hungary, South Korea, Sweden and Switzerland.
The mission, which took place from 19 to 28 November, was requested by the Dutch Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority (ANVS). During the ten-day mission, the team reviewed the plant’s preparation, organization and programs for long-term safe operation.
The Borssele nuclear power plant, operated by Elektriciteits-Produktiemaatschappij Zuid-Nederland (EPZ), has a pressurised water reactor with a net capacity of 485 MW(e) and contributes 3.2% of the country’s total electricity generation.
