Renovation of the Vitoria-Gasteiz theatre
The Principal Theatre of Vitoria-Gasteiz is a cultural and architectural emblem of the city. Inaugurated in 1918, it has been a meeting point for the city’s cultural life, hosting a wide variety of events, from plays and concerts to operas and dance performances. Its “Italian-style” architecture and its ability to adapt to different types of shows have made it a cultural landmark not only in the city but also in the region.
The importance of the Principal theatre lies in its role as a cultural epicenter. Over the years, it has witnessed countless performances and served as a platform for local, national, and international artists. Moreover, its location in the heart of Vitoria-Gasteiz makes it a key landmark and a gathering place for both residents and visitors. This is why its renovation project is so relevant –one of the most ambitious in the theatre’s history- essential for updating it to meet current regulations and for modernizing and improving the facilities while always preserving its essence and value.
The renovation of the stage area is crucial for modernizing and improving the theatre’s functionality, allowing for higher-quality events and increased safety in technical operations. This is where the most ambitious and technically complex work will take place, as it involves a complete transformation of the stage tower and its machinery, the construction of a new stage, and the implementation of a new orchestra pit.
The renovation work will be carried out according to Passivhaus construction standards, aiming to achieve the Enerphit certification through a step-by-step component approach. The goal is to improve the theatre’s energy efficiency and provide a more comfortable and healthy indoor environment for both audiences and staff. Additionally, it will contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing the building’s carbon footprint.
Another key aspect of the project is the significant improvement of audience comfort and accessibility. The seating and stands will be renewed to offer a more pleasant and comfortable experience for all attendees, making the auditorium an even more welcoming and functional space.
The aim of this renovation is to equip the Principal theatre with the necessary infrastructure to remain a cultural benchmark in the 21st century, offering a more comfortable, safe, and accessible space for the public, staff, and artists alike.
