Tackling the challenges of net zero and sustainability in the UK

On September 5, our colleagues Elena Calcerrada Romero (Infrastructure Sustainability Manager) and Borja Manzano Hidalgo (Railway Systems Sustainability Lead) represented IDOM at the annual summit of the Supply Chain Sustainability School (UK), held in Coventry.

This year, the event was held with the theme “Collaborating to deliver our Net Zero and Sustainability Commitments”, addressing the main challenges of sustainability from a holistic perspective. In addition to Net Zero commitment, topics such as social value, biodiversity, productivity, just transition, modern slavery and talent attraction were discussed.

During the sessions, the future of sustainable investment in the UK and Ireland was discussed, emphasizing the need for collaboration between the public and private sector. The importance of modernizing and rehabilitating existing infrastructure as part of the strategy to achieve decarbonization targets was also highlighted.

Another key point was innovation in the construction and infrastructure sector, promoting transparency and collaboration to reduce the carbon embedded in materials. The use of eco-labels and reliable databases were discussed as tools to achieve these goals, as well as the need to attract specialized talent to drive change towards a sustainable future.

In addition, the requirements for sustainability reporting and the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which will apply to IDOM from 2025, were discussed.

The event concluded with a session on responsible procurement policies, underlining the importance of the commitment of the entire supply chain to achieve real and effective change.
