Individual Plant Examinations for External Events (IPEEE) at Trillo, Ascó, Vandellós II and Cofrentes NPPs

The project was carried out due to the severe accident policy put into practice by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and passed to the Spanish Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) by the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN). Asked by the CSN, Trillo, Ascó, Vandellós II and Cofrentes NPPs conducted vulnerability studies against severe accidents produced by external events (IPEEE). The reference regulation, NUREG-1407, asks for the consideration of, at least, five types of events: earthquakes, fires within the plant, heavy winds, external floods and accidents related to installations or means of transport in surrounding routes. It also requires a confirmation that there are no exclusions about other specific events of the plant that could have a direct consequence in its vulnerability to severe accidents.
