Innovation pole for marine technologies and energy in Galicia

Spain

Galicia has established itself as a national benchmark in wave energy generation and, together with Andalusia, stands out for its areas of high wind speed and intensity. This region currently has five major port infrastructures that facilitate its connection with the outside world. In addition, Galician shipyards have the capacity to contribute significantly to the manufacture and export of support structures for wind turbines and offshore electrical substations, which are essential for wind energy projects in Northern Europe.

Galician agents have extensive experience and know-how in various fields, including construction, ship repair, onshore wind energy and the offshore industry, which includes oil platforms, support vessels and process modules.

In this context, the General Directorate for Energy Planning and Natural Resources and the Galician Innovation Agency have created an Innovation Center for Marine Energy and Energy Storage.

In this context, the Directorate General for Energy Planning and Natural Resources and the Galician Innovation Agency have set up a Marine Energy and Energy Storage Innovation Pole in collaboration with IDOM.

  • Assessment of the relevance of a research or innovation Center as a driving force for the Pole (based on existing information).
  • Review of the actions already developed.
  • Analysis of good practices of similar initiatives in Spain.
  • Detection and specification of the non-technological service needs of the sector’s industry, and the way in which they are currently being covered/satisfied.
  • Examination of Galicia’s capacities and shortcomings linked to the needs detected.
  • Definition of the types of alliances required, whether strategic, occasional or operational.
  • Determination of the key activities to be undertaken in the project and their priority.
  • Selection of the agents required for the start-up of the Pole, especially the driving companies.
  • Assessment of the types of governance required.
  • Drawing up an indicative timetable setting out the deadlines for the main phases leading up to the start-up of the hub.
  • Designation of the driving forces that may form part of the Steering Group.
  • Creation of the work plan and configuration of the Steering Group (roles and responsibilities).
  • Establishment of the Steering Group with the required agreements.

As a result, a roadmap has been defined to establish a Marine Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Innovation Pole. Cooperation agreements were also signed with driving companies and the portfolio of non-technological services for the Pole was defined. The work carried out represents the first step towards the development and implementation of a Marine Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Innovation Pole in Galicia.
