New Airside Commercial Areas at Terminal 1 in Barcelona Airport
Spain
Today, the concept of passenger experience is a central point in the design of airport spaces and processes. In this context, the commercial areas have not only become a strategic business unit, but also by attending to specific passenger needs and generating recreational spaces with unique experiences, they are opening up wide possibilities to enhance passenger experience.
IDOM with its partners, is in charge of carrying out a study and remodelling proposal of the commercial areas of Terminal 1 of Barcelona Airport in order to maximize the revenue per passenger and enhance the passenger experience at the Airport.
The work consisted of studying a new reconfiguration, both architectural and of the commercial mix on offer, in order to obtain the optimal distribution to make the most of the areas and to maximize commercial income. To this end, a series of studies were carried out on the profile of the airport’s passengers to offer a mix of appropriate commercial typologies from both a current and future perspective.
The work included a comparative Benchmarking of 6 international airports, analysis and studies of passenger behaviour, traffic demand study, flow study, market trend analysis, etc.
Three design alternatives were proposed and compared, including a technical and economic feasibility study, an operational study and a possible phasing. Finally, the optimum option was selected through a multicriteria matrix and workshops with the client.
