Steel mill & Bar Rolling mill in Pisco and Distribution Center in Lurín – Aceros Arequipa

Aceros Arequipa is undertaking several expansion and modernization projects at its Pisco facilities – the installation of a new steel mill, the modernization of the existing bar rolling mill, the Vacuum Degassing system, a lime plant and a new profile rolling mill – as well as the creation of a distribution center in Lurin.
One of the greatest challenges has been to execute the projects without interrupting the ongoing production processes
The New Complete Steelworks with an electric arc furnace will not just expand the variety of products produced, but also increase production of liquid steel from scrap raw material to 1.25 million t/year, that is, 50% more than previous production capacity. This project includes state-of-the-art SMS technology and was commissioned during the first half of 2021.
The Modernization of the existing Bar Rolling Mill will increase production capacity to 0.4 million t/year. This project uses next-generation technology from Danieli, and was commissioned during the first quarter of 2021.
With the installation of the new Vacuum Degasser (VD), special steels with great added value can be produced. This project was completed during the second half of 2022.
The lime plant will supply the new steel mill with reactive and dolomitic lime, thereby eliminating the need to rely on third parties for these additives required for the steelmaking process. This project is underway and is expected to be completed and commissioned during the first quarter of 2024.
The new profile rolling mill, recently awarded to IDOM, will be equipped with the latest Danieli technology and will have a capacity of 0.33 million t/year production of profiles including rounds. Commissioning is scheduled for the first half of 2024.
The investment made in the Lurín, specifically in the Marcropolis II industrial center, involves the creation of a Distribution Center. The center will be used for the storage and dispatch operations of finished products, as well as steel pipe production, coil cutting, etc. It is expected to be operational in early 2023.
The projects include next-generation technology, auxiliary equipment, and infrastructure that guarantee yields and production qualities according to the state of the art. Likewise, the design of the plant provides efficient, sustainable solutions that optimize the consumption of resources (such as water).
Aceros Arequipa has entrusted IDOM to provide Engineering, Purchasing, Project Management (EPCM) services and Construction Management for the execution of each of these projects, from the conception phase to its start-up, as well as the Balance of Plant (BoP) engineering. The multidisciplinary project team has been made up of a group of professionals who were located permanently on site and a second group working from our offices.
