Vulnerability of the Natura 2000 Network to Climate Change
Spain
Natura 2000 is a network of biodiversity conservation areas in the European Union. It consists of special areas of conservation and areas of special protection for birds. Its purpose is to ensure the long-term survival of Europe’s most threatened species and habitats.
IDOM has carried out the analysis of the exposure of the Natura 2000 Network to climate change, as well as the habitats of community and regional interest.
Based on the aforementioned analysis, a series of indicators have been developed that define the vulnerability and risk of these habitats. Based on these indicators, a network of climatic shelters has been proposed and the existing network of protected areas has been redesigned.
