New high-performance trans-European rail connection
IDOM is the first Engineering Firm to commence work
Rail Baltica is a greenfield rail transport infrastructure project with a goal to integrate the Baltic States in the European rail network. The project includes five European Union countries – Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and indirectly also Finland.
In February 2019, Rail Baltica announced that given the firm’s extensive rail experience, IDOM had been awarded the design of the first two sections of the project. IDOM will therefore be responsible for 17% of the total of the new Baltic railway network: 150 km of high-performance railway, suitable for freight traffic.
Both contracts, which correspond to the Pärnu-Rapla and Kaunas-Ramygala sections (in Estonia and Lithuania, respectively), have already been signed in the cities of Tallinn and Vilnius. During the act of the second signing, Timo Riihimäki, RB Rail AS CEO, stated “We are satisfied with the experience and calibre of the selected company. It will bring the expertise from the Spanish high-speed rail – the longest high-speed rail network in Europe”.
The scope of the work, which has already begun, involves the development of Value Engineering, Master Design and Detailed Design of the entire infrastructure and track superstructure, including the conceptual design of other subsystems, such as electrification, railway signaling, etc. In addition, once the design is approved, IDOM will supervise the design throughout the construction phase.

Some facts
The two sections of the project, for which IDOM is responsible, comprise a total length of 150 km of double track, including four stations and the railway tunnels and viaducts. The viaduct over the Neris River, 1,700 m long, will be the longest railway viaduct in all the Baltic countries.
The new railway line will be designed with a track gauge of 1,435 mm, in line with all the requirements of the Technical specifications for Interoperability (TSI), with a design speed of 249 km/h for passenger traffic and 120 km/h for freight traffic.
